- Chosen by Voters G'day,I am an immigrant and have been living in Melbourne for 16yrs. I can understand your frustration and helpless feeling. Unfortunately writing skill is not something that easily improved while living in your home country and without intensive course.Just an idea: Apply for an English course in Australia. Some English school academics feel that IELTS band scores can be improved with intensive English study between 5 to 10 weeks. Of course this has to be done in university English college, where they can provide you with the English course specially developed to help Masters or PhD students to improve their English, including writing.Another thing is, before you are applying, e-mail the English school and ask how many students do they have that come from your home country. This is important (in my opinion) b'cos if you still mix with your fellow countrymen/women in the English school, your English will not improve alot, and this will be a waste of money. I am suggesting the universities in the countryside. There are only 41 universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and tightly controlled, so the quality and recognition is the same from every uni. Just visit www.idp.edu.au. IDP is an organisation that gives info to international students to study in Australia.Hope this helps. Good luck and welcome to Australia
